“I am currently standing at the section where the Yerevan-Sisian-Goris highway leads towards Artsakh and also the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is the narrowest part of Syunik. Here, the width of the border is 25-27 km. This means that if Azerbaijan indeed intends to launch a military aggression against Armenia in conjunction with Turkey and attempt to seize Syunik, then one of the most likely places it could pursue such an adventure is precisely this area,” said journalist Tatul Hakobyan in a recent live broadcast.

“But this area is notable for another reason. It is a fact that the international community, including Russia and Turkey, is forcing the opening of infrastructure and roads in the region, and according to the documents currently on the negotiating table, the Armenia-Azerbaijan unblocking will occur in two areas. The first area is the Kazakh-Ijevan section, which also includes a railway, and the second communication that is being discussed is expected to open not via Meghri, as many believe, but approximately through this area. Why can’t the road pass through Meghri at this time? Because there is currently no road through Meghri; the constructed road simply does not exist. There is a road, but it is of local significance,” said the analyst.
