New Restrictions Imposed in Several European Countries

The leaders of Germany's 16 states and federal officials are set to negotiate today regarding the coronavirus pandemic, as the number of new infections continues to rise in the country. They will seek a unified approach on new regulations and restrictions.

Discussions are also expected to cover who can access public services and how to boost Germany's vaccination rate, which currently stands at around 68 percent.

The ongoing fourth wave of infections has put pressure on some hospitals in the country, forcing some to seek assistance from other EU nations.

In Belgium, restrictions are being tightened due to a sharp increase in coronavirus cases recorded over the past week, despite 76 percent of the population being vaccinated. Children aged 10 and older will now be required to wear masks in public places, and anyone who can must work from home for four out of five days at least until December 12.

Sweden has announced the introduction of COVID passports for the first time, which will be required for events with over 100 participants in enclosed spaces starting December 1. "The spread of the disease in Europe is noticeable again, and many countries have had to impose new restrictions," said Sweden's Minister of Health Lena Hallengren, adding, "Such an increase has not been seen in Sweden yet, but we are not isolated from the outside world and must be prepared for it to affect us."

In recent days, the Czech Republic has seen a significant rise in infections, with nearly 22,500 new cases detected on Tuesday, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic. Consequently, new restrictions are being implemented for unvaccinated individuals and those not infected with coronavirus. Authorities explain that earlier measures have not been sufficient to curb the spread of the virus.
