How Many People Are Infected with Coronavirus in Prisons? The Minister is Concerned

Out of approximately 2,100 detainees in Armenia’s penitentiaries, 55 are currently infected with coronavirus. This was stated by Justice Minister Karen Andreasyan in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.

“In my opinion, this is a growing percentage, and like in the rest of society, we will have to implement certain stricter measures in the penitentiaries. Otherwise, the infection is spreading at a terrifying rate,” said Andreasyan.

It is worth noting that there have been a total of 83 recorded cases of the infection in the prisons so far, which means that the recent 55 cases are the highest figure. As of November 3, the number of infected individuals in the penitentiaries was 49. Additionally, one ill inmate passed away on November 1.

It should be recalled that during the session on November 11, the Armenian government decided to extend the coronavirus quarantine restrictions in Armenia until June 20, 2022. Among other restrictions, the ban on long-term visits in correctional facilities will remain in effect until summer 2022.
