Regular Flights from Yerevan to Kapan to Begin on January 20
The Civil Aviation Committee has received a relevant application from "Novair" airline to operate regular flights from Yerevan to Kapan and back. This project was included in the package of government issues not subject to reporting, which indicates that the flights are scheduled to commence on January 20, 2022, with a frequency of two flights per week.
Today, the government decided to allocate financial resources to the "Syunik" airport. The project's justification mentions that the funding for Kapan's "Syunik" airport has been temporarily suspended, which may jeopardize the further operation of the airport. It is noted that "Syunik Airport" CJSC has financial obligations for the current year. Specifically, it has total operating expenses, salaries, and taxes amounting to 49.5 million drams for the year 2021. The government will provide funds to cover these expenses.
It is worth reminding that restoration work for the Soviet-era airport in Kapan started in 2017. Since the early 1990s, Azerbaijan began shelling the airport and the city of Kapan. In 2017, when the reconstruction work began, an unexploded bomb was discovered on the runway. Under the small aviation development program in Armenia, the restoration work of the "Syunik" airport was completed on December 5, 2020.
In accordance with Armenian legislation and international requirements, the Civil Aviation Committee carried out the certification process of the airport aerodrome, resulting in the issuance of a certificate to the aerodrome by order No. 279-A of the Committee's president dated November 18, 2020. It is planned to operate L-410 type aircraft with up to 19 seats at "Syunik" airport.
