New Security Threat Emerges in Syunik, Says Tigran Abrahamyan

Member of the National Assembly from the "I Have Honor" faction, Tigran Abrahamyan, wrote on his Facebook page: “The Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia announced on Public Television that today Azerbaijan has informed Armenia that starting from midnight, it plans to implement border and customs control functions on the Goris-Kapan road section, meaning that checkpoints will be established.”

“According to the Secretary of the Security Council's statement, when traveling from Goris to Kapan via Vorotan and Shurnukh, Azerbaijan will conduct security and customs inspections in accordance with procedures for vehicles with Armenian state license plates. This government has recently asserted that it has an arrangement with Azerbaijan for the uninterrupted passage of Armenian vehicles through this road; however, it turned out that this arrangement would only last until the construction of an alternative road. It is clear that the Armenian authorities were aware of this regime being established well before Azerbaijan's notification, as the Security Council Secretary mentioned that they had already taken steps and a similar border regime would also be implemented by Armenia.”

“What can I say? Apart from the blowing up of yet another political propaganda bubble, a new security landmine is being laid in Syunik.”

It is worth mentioning that Armen Grigoryan stated: “Today, the Azerbaijani side informed the Armenian side that starting from midnight today, it will implement border and customs control functions on the Goris-Kapan road section, meaning that it will set up checkpoints. The Armenian side will also take corresponding measures.”

“This means that checkpoints for implementing customs and border control functions will also be established in that section of the road, and we have already begun this work in advance to operate in that direction. However, as announced, the Kapan-Tatev road is ready, from which one can say that there is a safe route available to Goris or Yerevan. The alternative road is no longer just finished, it is usable for transporting both goods and any other type of vehicle. It is very important that a new road has been constructed.”
