Armenian Robot Recognized as TIME Magazine's Best Invention of 2021
The first Armenian robot, Robin, based on artificial intelligence, has been honored as one of TIME magazine's 100 Best Inventions of 2021.
According to Armenpress, the latest issue of the renowned TIME magazine is dedicated to the top 100 innovations of the year, among which the Armenian robot has found its unique place. In its coverage, TIME describes the Robin robot as a "caring companion."
TIME recounts a story from one of the Armenian clinics where an 8-year-old child suffering from pneumonia refused to eat for two consecutive days. During that time, the medical staff invited Robin to the girl's room. For about 20 minutes, they played games and discussed favorite animals, after which Robin left, promising to return only on the condition that the little girl would eat. Following this, the child surprised everyone, and Robin undoubtedly returned.
TIME also quotes the robot's founder, Karen Khachikian, emphasizing that the team's goal was not to create just another technological device, but a trustworthy and peer companion for children. The article mentions that the Robin robot is used in 12 medical institutions worldwide and will be installed in an additional 100 American hospitals in the coming 12 months.
“This is an unprecedented success not only for our team but for all of Armenia. Being among TIME magazine's top 100 innovations is truly a great victory for our country and our entire scientific potential. It is both a responsibility and extremely pleasant,” states Karen Khachikian, co-founder of the Armenian company Expper Technologies that created Robin.
The article also addresses the robot's mission to help hospitalized children overcome stress and ease the treatment process. Robin assists children in recovery by coloring the hospital environment. Through its unique approach, Robin successfully reduces children’s stress, improves their experience in the hospital, and eases the subsequent work of the medical staff. Additionally, during various medical interventions, Robin manages to divert children's attention and lessen their perception of pain.
The robot has also found its way into orphanages, completely changing the daily routines of the residents there. Notably, recently, the world-famous Forbes magazine also featured Robin. Furthermore, Robin received the award for Best Product Design from the well-known Fast Company. The robot has attracted significant interest abroad and is already being applied in numerous leading hospitals and medical institutions in the United States.
