Positive Conclusion Given by the Committee on Amendments to the Citizenship Passport Law: What Does It Mean?

The Standing Committee on Defense and Security of the National Assembly has given a positive conclusion on the package of draft laws proposing amendments and additions to the "Law on the Passport of a Citizen of the Republic of Armenia" and the "Law on Identification Cards." The package will be included in the agenda of the plenary sessions.

The draft proposes to issue passports to citizens under the age of 16, as well as male citizens who are 16 years old, until they reach the age of 19, instead of the current age limit of 18. Additionally, when turning 19, during the deferral period for compulsory military service, it suggests issuing passports for a period stipulated by the law on military service and soldier status, excluding the call to service.

“The draft also proposes, through the initiative of the Minister of Defense, to provide male citizens over the age of 18 with passports for a longer period in special cases, namely for education, medical treatment, or participation in sports and cultural events,” said Ara Fidian, Deputy Chief of the Police of Armenia.
