All Maps from the 1920s-30s Have Been Agreed Upon Between Armenia and Azerbaijan: Pashinyan

Our observations indicate that the maps are reprints. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in an interview with Public Television.

“We are talking about the 1989 and 1975 maps, which are mostly reprints. Since they are paper materials, they wear out. It is important to understand on what legal basis the demarcation and delimitation occurred between Soviet Armenia and Soviet Azerbaijan. In general, what legal basis is there for the border demarcation between Armenia and Azerbaijan? The legal basis is recorded on the map, but it should also be emphasized that yes, these reprinted maps are not identical, because during the time of the Soviet Union, there was a tradition where brotherly republics donated territories to each other, and this was done at the local level and based on reciprocity principles,” he noted.

In response to a question about what legal basis could exist for the administrative territorial donations that took place within the Soviet Union, the Prime Minister replied, “We need to understand what legal basis it occurred on and how relevant those legal bases are to the topic. But overall, we have come to the conclusion that all the legal bases are those that were agreed upon between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the 1920s-1930s. In other words, we must ultimately follow them. There is a practical issue that the agreements mentioned in the text are reflected on the maps; this is the work that needs to be done,” Pashinyan concluded.
