Uzbekistan Minister Dismissed Over Social Media Restrictions
The Minister of Information Technologies and Communications of Uzbekistan has been dismissed from his post. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has already signed the decree to remove the minister from office, according to kun.uz.
What is noteworthy about this dismissal are the reasons behind it. Just the day before, it was revealed that the activities of popular social media platforms such as Telegram, Facebook, Odnoklassniki, and YouTube were restricted in Uzbekistan. The reason cited was the alleged violation of the personal data law by these platforms.
However, it soon became clear that President Mirziyoyev was strongly dissatisfied with this decision, labeling it as shortsighted, leading to the dismissal of the minister responsible for the decision. By last night, access to all social media platforms in Uzbekistan had been restored.
