We are Committed to the Decision on the De-Politicization of Universities: Dumanyan
The Government of Armenia remains committed to the political decision that no officials should be present in the councils of university trustees. Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports Vahram Dumanyan stated this during a conversation with reporters after a Cabinet meeting, as reported by Armenpress. He recalled that the Constitutional Court had recognized certain provisions of the law on 'Higher Education and Science' as unconstitutional.
In response to comments that there is ongoing discussion about the need for universities to be de-politicized while officials continue to participate in university trustee councils, Dumanyan noted that several universities, particularly HMPU, YSU, and YSMU, have deputy ministers and other officials involved in their councils, but this should not come as a surprise.
“We had presented the law on 'Higher Education and Science,' the Constitutional Court recognized certain provisions as unconstitutional. Now we are circulating a new version of the law, while maintaining the same principle that political figures should not be involved. Everything has been done within the framework of the current laws,” he said.
