Tigran Avinyan Attempts to Change the Situation in Meghri
The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports that the authorities are struggling to come to terms with the losses recorded in several local self-governing bodies. The publication noted days ago that the ruling "Civil Contract" party is making extensive efforts to crown its candidate as the 'king' in even the smallest communities of Armenia.
In the Meghri community, for instance, it remains unclear who will ultimately be elected as the community mayor. The "Republic" party received the most votes in the elections, securing 6 votes; however, this is not sufficient for them to elect a mayor on their own.
According to information from "Zhoghovurd," former Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan is attempting to change the dynamics. He has told the "Republic," "Liberal," and "Living Country" parties that they should join forces with the ruling party, which received 5 mandates, and help elect the government’s candidate as mayor. This is urged solely because the ruling party currently holds power, and therefore, they should move as directed by the authorities.
However, the parties have reacted negatively to Avinyan's statements, refusing to accept any proposals made in such a tone. Consequently, as of October 17, it remains uncertain who will ultimately become the mayor of Meghri.
It is reported that the authorities have set a condition for Tigran Avinyan: if he manages to achieve success in the Syunik local government elections, management of the Zangezur Copper-Molybdenum Combine will be entrusted to him. Accordingly, the former deputy prime minister is striving to ensure that he can take control in all communities where the authorities have some maneuvering room.
