Moscow Plans to No Longer Involve Migrant Workers in Construction Sector
There is a severe shortage of labor in the construction sector in Moscow. This was announced by Andrey Bochkaryov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow, who added that the current labor deficit in the capital's construction industry stands at 40 percent. He noted that this situation has arisen due to a mass exodus of labor migrants, and if previously there were 120,000 labor migrants working on Moscow's construction sites, this number has now been reduced by three times.
Bochkaryov also mentioned that currently, migrants in construction are paid between 50,000 to 60,000 rubles per month; however, they are still unwilling to work, even if offered higher wages. As a result, the authorities in Moscow have begun developing a program that would allow the construction sector to operate without relying on migrant labor.
The Deputy Mayor observed that there is a need to enhance construction processes technologically so that they require three times less labor. He added that an experimental implementation of such a program is currently underway in certain projects.
