Saakashvili Refuses to Take Medications and Undergo Tests
The former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike in the Rustavi prison for nearly a month, has refused to cooperate with doctors and has decided to no longer undergo tests.
This was reported by RIA Novosti, noting that Saakashvili has changed his decision several times in recent days regarding whether to receive medical assistance on-site.
He has been in prison for 29 days. Days ago, he announced that he was refusing the assistance of local doctors in protest, as the prison authorities had tightened the rules for meetings with lawyers.
“Starting today, I will no longer take medication for hunger and will not undergo tests,” Saakashvili stated in a message posted on his Facebook page.
Saakashvili added that the second round of local self-government elections scheduled for this Saturday aims to prevent the establishment of totalitarianism in the country. According to him, it is an important day for Georgian democracy and salvation.
It should be noted that Mikheil Saakashvili was arrested on October 1 when he returned to Georgia to support opposition forces in the local self-government elections taking place on October 2. The former president had been convicted in absentia for assaulting a member of parliament and organizing the murder of a banker. Additionally, he has faced charges in several other cases, including embezzling state funds, abuse of power, and illegally crossing the country's border.
