New Footage of Nova the Wild Boar Caught by Camera Traps
Recently, the camera traps of the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) captured new footage of Nova the wild boar within the territory of the Caucasian Biodiversity Reserve (CWR). The return of the boar to CWR indicates that the reserve is a safe and rich environment for this predator, which has now established permanent residency there. This is a significant achievement for the conservation of Armenia’s natural environment and wildlife.
The Caucasian boar is a rare species listed in the Red Book of Animals of Armenia, and its preservation is currently of utmost importance. The subspecies is included in the IUCN Red List (ver. 3.1) as “Endangered EN C2a(i),” while the species is classified as “Near Threatened.” According to the IUCN Red List criteria, it is evaluated as “Critically Endangered” (CR C2a(i); D). The periodic fixation of the animal's movement also indicates that there is a viable food base for the species and all the conditions necessary for a secure environment.
It is worth noting that Nova, the wild boar, was first filmed in the CWR area back in the autumn of 2020. The continued operation of the Caucasian Biodiversity Reserve owes an immense amount to the support of our partners, including the World Land Trust, Viva-MTS, ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, and IUCN NL.
