Armen Sarkissian Announces Conditions for Resignation

The President of Armenia, Armen Sarkissian, stated in an interview with RBC that he is ready to resign immediately if the Constitution in Armenia is amended to establish a presidential system of governance. He noted that he supports such a governance model since the people of Armenia have become accustomed to the presidential system, and parliamentary democracy is perceived as challenging.

"If I say that changes will be made to the Constitution, I do not mean in any case to include myself. If ultimately we amend the Constitution through a referendum and it comes into effect, then a new president will be elected, and if a new Constitution is adopted, I will resign," President Sarkissian said.
