Government Attempts to Conceal the Situation on the Border, Says MP

The situation surrounding Armenia and Artsakh is more than just a concern. In a meeting with journalists, Tigran Abrahamyan, an MP from the "Honorary Title" faction of the National Assembly, stated that although the government does not want opposition MPs to address the current situation, the opposition is organizing an urgent discussion on the topic of demarcation.

The MP reported that the Chief of General Staff did not respond to his written request to study the military units carrying out combat duty on the front lines, particularly in the Sotk-Khoznavor section, while the Minister of Defense stated that the MP’s visit to that area is not deemed advisable.

“It is clear that the government is trying in every possible way to conceal the real situation on the border and to mask its fundamental process of not taking any serious action,” he said.

Abrahamyan believes a complex situation has emerged regarding the delimitation process. Armenia is simultaneously trying to communicate that it is interested in the delimitation process, even referring to Soviet maps, which should be the basis for these processes.

“The government’s urgent actions and hurry have raised quite a few questions about this situation. It is initially unclear, for instance, which specific Soviet period maps are being referenced, as these have been amended with provisions that do not correspond to the constitution during the Soviet period. Armenia is narrowing its maneuvering capability in ensuring a more advantageous position in the delimitation process and finding solutions that will serve the interests of Armenia and Artsakh in the future,” he noted.

Abrahamyan emphasized that delimitation is a considerably lengthy process, and Armenia could enter a process that may lead to quite dangerous situations in the coming decades. According to the MP, everything depends on the final text of the document.

“The processes occurring around Armenia and Artsakh must take into account a very important circumstance—clarification of the status of Artsakh, which should be based on the issue of the realization of the right to self-determination and its international recognition,” Abrahamyan concluded.
