EU Representative: 'Let’s See How We Can Support Baku in the Restoration of Nagorno-Karabakh'

The cooperation between the European Union and Azerbaijan will be strengthened, stated the head of the EU delegation in Azerbaijan, Ambassador Piotr Michalko, while discussing the projects being implemented by the EU in Azerbaijan.

“At today’s photo exhibition, we are showcasing a small part of the work done by the EU in Azerbaijan. I believe that in the future I will have success in such endeavors. The EU-Azerbaijan relations are diverse and based on the existing connections between the government and civil society,” he mentioned.

Michalko emphasized that up to 50 preschool educational institutions have been established in 10 cities and regions, and teacher training has been organized. The diplomat highlighted that the EU is also supporting Azerbaijan in its fight against COVID-19. Additionally, in the post-conflict period, humanitarian assistance amounting to €16.9 million has been allocated to the region (jointly to Azerbaijan and Armenia), of which €9.1 million is designated for Azerbaijan. “After the conflict, the UN allocated €2.5 million for the humanitarian demining process. Ten districts of Azerbaijan, which faced the consequences of the conflict last year, received humanitarian aid amounting to €450,000,” he noted.

He mentioned that in the near future, EU cooperation with Azerbaijan within the framework of the Eastern Partnership program will be further strengthened, with various mechanisms being applied for that purpose. Michalko also expressed their interest in understanding how they can support Azerbaijan in the restoration of Nagorno-Karabakh.
