Ukraine Has Returned to the 1990s, Economist Says
Despite government assurances that Ukraine is ready for winter, the country may face an energy deficit due to a lack of fuel. This is reported by Gazeta.ru, citing Doctor of Economic Sciences Alexei Plotnikov.
He noted that the authorities and the population have begun to differ so much in their assessments over recent years that it has negatively affected the situation in Ukraine. Consequently, Kyiv claims that the winter will be warm and there will be enough resources for everyone, but people see that they need to prepare for power outages and cold weather.
“All of this reminds me more of the 1990s, when for some reason we would occasionally experience power outages when citizens came home from work to prepare dinner, everything would turn off and we would light candles,” Plotnikov said. He added that the current situation in the country is unpredictable, as besides the energy issue, there are also other problems, such as the coronavirus.
