Proposal to Issue Armenian Passport for 2-Year Term: When Will the Bill Take Effect?

The police have proposed to reduce the validity period of passports issued to citizens of the Republic of Armenia to two years. The relevant draft decision has been circulated by the police on the Unified Website for the Publication of Legal Acts, as reported by Hetq.am.

The regulations of the Armenian passport system and the description of the citizen's passport are established by a government decision from December 25, 1998, according to which a passport is issued to citizens of the Republic of Armenia for a validity period of 10 years. Now, the police are suggesting to decrease this term by 8 years, making it just 2.

The police emphasize that the necessity for this decision arises from the implementation of a directive issued during the meeting of the State Legal Committee on September 29, 2021. However, the police have not disclosed what exactly was stated in that directive.

It is important to note that this draft decision will only take legal effect after being approved by the government. Currently, the draft is in the public discussion phase. If accepted, the decision will enter into force on the day following its official publication.
