Armenia Approaches 'Burning Red Zone' in Coronavirus Indicators: Romella Abovyan

The pandemic situation in Armenia due to the coronavirus remains quite tense. Data analysis from the past 14 days indicates a roughly 50% increase in new cases compared to the previous 14 days.

At a press conference held at the Armenian News Agency "Armenpress," Romella Abovyan, head of the Infectious and Non-Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Department at the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Armenia, noted that the reproduction rate of the virus is above 1, which indicates rapid spread.

“Unfortunately, there has been an increase of 1.5 to 1.7 times in new cases across all age groups, including children and teenagers. According to European Union standards, we are nearing the 'burning red zone.' In other words, we are transitioning from the red zone to the 'burning red zone.' Currently, our country's incidence rate is 475; if it reaches 500, we will be considered in the burning red zone (the incidence rate is calculated per 100,000 population - ed.). I should note that the incidence is high in all regions,” Abovyan stated.

According to the specialist, the disease has become more prevalent among younger individuals, primarily targeting those aged 30 to 50. Hospitals are operating under severe overload, and the bed capacity has been exhausted, with many cases presenting with clinically severe manifestations.

“I must say that the situation in the country is quite concerning. There are many cases where our citizens seek help too late. First, they delay testing; when symptoms appear, they assume it is just seasonal flu. They postpone until their lungs are significantly affected and then come to the medical facility. I urge our population, if you have symptoms such as a sore throat, headache, fever, or body weakness, to contact a doctor immediately,” Abovyan remarked.
