Sale of Certain Types of Polyethylene Bags to Be Banned

Starting January 1, 2022, the sale of polyethylene bags with a thickness of up to 50 microns will be prohibited in Armenia.

Plastic is difficult to decompose in nature and, despite this, is consumed excessively by humanity. Approximately 5 trillion polyethylene bags are used worldwide each year. Some of these bags are not disposed of properly, accumulating in oceans and remaining on land, causing significant harm to both animal and plant life, as well as to human health.

The Ministry of Environment has announced that after the New Year, Armenia will prohibit the sale of polyethylene bags with a thickness of up to 50 microns. Legislative changes have been made, and work is underway with economic operators to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to comply with the legal requirements starting in January 2022.
