Germany Bears Historical Responsibility for the Holocaust, Angela Merkel

The Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, who is on a farewell visit to Israel, has emphasized Germany's responsibility for the security of the Jewish state. According to her, the fact that despite the Nazi crimes against the Jewish people, the two countries have managed to establish good relations is a joyful occasion. The Israeli side plays a significant role in those relations.

However, the Holocaust remains a special event for which Germany bears and will continue to bear historical responsibility, the Chancellor stated.

As Israel’s democratic Jewish state is surrounded by countries where, from a Western perspective, there is no democracy, it is especially important for Germany to expand its cooperation with Israel in all areas, one of which is security.

“Germany is not neutral on the issue of Israel's security; on the contrary, Israel's security is one of the foundations of our state policy,” emphasized the federal chancellor.
