Proposal to Name a Square in Istanbul After the Balyan Family
A commemorative event for the Balyan family, one of the most renowned Armenian architects of the Ottoman Empire, was held at the Armenian Holy Cross Cemetery in the Şişli district of Istanbul. According to the Armenian newspaper “Agos,” the event was attended by the Patriarch of the Armenians in Istanbul, the Mayor of Istanbul, and prominent Armenian figures from the city.
Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu emphasized the significant architectural contributions of the Balyan family, stating that their work has enriched Istanbul's cultural heritage. He pledged to do everything in his power to ensure that one of the squares in the city is named after the Balyan family.
The Armenian Patriarch, Archbishop Sahak Mashalian, expressed his satisfaction with the mayor's initiative. It is worth noting that the Balyan family were among the most famous architects of the Ottoman Empire, having built magnificent palaces, bridges, mosques, churches, and various buildings in Istanbul.
