Georgia Declares October 11 as a Day of Mourning

The government of Georgia has declared October 11 as a day of mourning in memory of those who died as a result of the collapse of a residential building in Batumi. According to TASS, this was announced by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on his Facebook page.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred in Batumi, and I extend my condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. The entire nation of Georgia mourns with them. By my decision, Monday, October 11, will be declared a day of mourning in Georgia in memory of the victims,” wrote the Prime Minister, adding that the state will provide assistance to those affected.

According to Sputnik Georgia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has detained three individuals in connection with the collapse, including the owner of an apartment on the first floor and two hired workers who were conducting renovation work. The agency reported that the renovation work was carried out with gross violations of safety regulations, which led to the collapse of one of the entrances of the multi-story building.

Earlier, it was reported that on October 8, a part of a five-story building collapsed in Batumi, resulting in six reported fatalities, according to the latest updates.
