Lars is Open: Traffic Congestion of Hundreds of Trucks Reported
Several hundred vehicles have accumulated near the 'Upper Lars' border checkpoint on the Georgian side, which was closed for 5-6 hours. This information was provided to Sputnik Armenia by Aram Tananian, an attaché for customs issues at the Armenian Embassy in Russia. He explained that the checkpoint was closed due to deteriorating weather conditions.
“The road has been closed since 08:00 today. However, traffic has now been restored,” Tananian said. According to him, prior to the closure, about 400 cargo trucks left Georgia for Russia in one day, including nearly 100 from Armenia. An equal number of trucks also crossed the opposite direction from Russia to Georgia.
Earlier, the Department of Roads of Georgia’s Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure announced that the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway, which had been closed due to weather conditions, is now open for traffic.
Since the end of September, there have been reports of accumulating vehicles bound for Russia at the 'Upper Lars' checkpoint. Tananian had previously clarified that this situation was triggered by a significant influx of vehicles coming from Turkey.
