Concerns in Armenian Society Over Flights to Nakhichevan via Armenia, While Civil Aviation Remains Silent

The airline "Azerbaijan Airlines" announced that starting October 6, it will utilize the airspace of Armenia for passenger flights from Baku to Nakhichevan. "From now on, AZAL can use all existing air corridors, including those passing through the airspace of Armenia and Iran," the airline stated.

This announcement has ignited widespread discussions among the public. Experts are raising alarms as the statement does not mention that Armenia has permitted these flights, but rather that the airline will utilize the airspace of both Armenia and Iran. The public is also questioning why Armenia is allowing these flights in light of yesterday's restrictions from Iran.

It is important to note that these are passenger flights, not military cargo, and to consider the fact that the same company will also conduct flights through Iranian airspace.

In an effort to gain clarity on these developments, Auroranews.am has been trying to contact the Civil Aviation Committee, but has been unsuccessful in reaching the press department or any other employees of the organization. Furthermore, Civil Aviation has not yet provided an official response regarding this news.

It is worth mentioning that on September 9, Auroranews contacted David Sarukhanyan, the head of the Civil Aviation Airports Certification and Air Traffic Management Department, regarding flights from Turkey to Nakhichevan. Sarukhanyan noted that Armenia follows the principles of the Chicago Convention, according to which member states cannot unjustifiably close their airspace, thus Armenia's airspace is open to all.
