What is Iran's 'Message' to Turkey and Azerbaijan: Expert
Iran's message is that it will not allow the activation of Turkish elements in the region. In an interview with "Pastinfo," international expert Grigor Balasanyan discussed regional issues, commenting on hints from the neighboring country that it will not permit changes in regional borders.
"The message is that they will not allow the unification of the two Turkic states in the region through corridors or other communication routes," he stated.
The international expert noted that Iran is particularly interested in Syunik, as it understands very well that its northern part is populated by ethnic Azerbaijanis, and there could be dangers in the future.
"If the Turkic element strengthens in Syunik and connects the two Turkic states through Syunik, then whether intentionally or not, the Azerbaijanis will also feel the impact of that," he explained.
He pointed out that there are about 15 million Azerbaijanis living in northern Iran, and one fine day, it is possible that centripetal declarations could be made among them, movements could start, and they could be funded, directed by Azerbaijan and Turkey.
"For the past 30 years, Armenia has always been a reliable ally for Iran. The areas liberated by us—referring to the Araks River gorge—have been a reliable rear for Iran. In 1992, Iran's Ministry of Defense visited Armenia and urged the Armenian side that Iran would never accept the Araks gorge passing back to Azerbaijan. You can concede anything you want; these areas must remain inviolable because Iran had just barely freed itself from Azerbaijani interference," he added.
According to the expert, Iran does not hide its ambitions, openly stating that it will not tolerate changes to the sovereign territories of Armenia. Iran is advancing its interests here, which currently coincide with those of the Republic of Armenia.
