We Must Value the Dignity of the Elderly and Ensure They Do Not Feel Unworthy to Society: Ombudsman

The state must create all conditions for the elderly so that they feel valued and not isolated from society. This was stated by the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, during the opening of the 3rd International Congress on Geriatrics and Gerontology, organized on the occasion of International Day of Older Persons.

With the support of the UN Population Fund and the Government of the Russian Federation, the congress organized by the Association for Ensuring the Health and Care of the Elderly and the Armenian Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology highlighted the approach that life does not end after retirement age and that their opportunities and rights should not be limited.

In evaluating the potential of older people, it is essential to have a healthcare system that responds to the needs of the elderly and promotes healthy longevity. Arman Tatoyan emphasized that the aging of the population and overcoming its consequences pose a significant challenge for Armenia as well, and statistical data indicate that failing to carry out active work in this direction will lead the state to serious problems decades later.

The Human Rights Defender also addressed the need for work aimed at integrating elderly individuals living in nursing homes and psychiatric institutions into society, revealing their capabilities, and valuing their experience. According to Arman Tatoyan, the rich life experience of older people, which has contributed to the development of our society, should serve as an example for the younger generation.

Ensuring social protection for the elderly, maintaining their health, improving their quality of life, and subsequently creating necessary and sufficient preconditions for a dignified old age is extremely important. The Human Rights Defender also highlighted the necessity of developing systems for passing on the experiences of former military personnel who have reached retirement age to future generations.
