Court Reaches Decision on Appeal Against Arrest of former Prosecutor Agvan Hovsepyan
The Court of Appeal, led by Judge Sevak Hambartsumyan, has just entered the deliberation room to make a decision regarding the appeal against the arrest of former Chief Prosecutor and former head of the Investigative Committee Agvan Hovsepyan. This was reported in an interview with lawyer Erik Aleksanyan.
The court's decision will be announced on October 4 at 11:30 AM.
As previously reported, Agvan Hovsepyan was arrested on September 7 in the morning. The investigative body has filed charges against Hovsepyan within the framework of a criminal case that has been under investigation for about 1.5 years, and has submitted a request to the court for his arrest as a measure of restraint, which was granted by Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan.
Importantly, the investigative body has been unable to accuse Hovsepyan, who has held the highest leadership positions in law enforcement agencies for nearly 45 years, of any wrongdoing related to his official activities. He is accused of engaging in illegal entrepreneurial activities, with features of alleged money laundering.
Moreover, when making the decision to arrest, the court noted that there is no possibility of hiding from investigation and cited his previously held high positions as a basis for his arrest, suggesting that he might influence the investigation, without providing any concrete examples.
The defense has filed an appeal contesting the court's decision to arrest Agvan Hovsepyan and to recognize his arrest as lawful.
The presented appeal has been assigned to Judge Sevak Hambartsumyan, whose rating, as of September 28, is 10 points. For comparison, it should be noted that the highest-ranked judges in the legal community currently have ratings around 60 points.
