The Number of Soldiers Killed in the Last Three and a Half Years Revealed
In the last three and a half years, there have been 144 recorded deaths of military personnel associated with service, of which only 86 occurred during 2020 and the first eight months of 2021. This information has been provided to NEWS.am in response to a written inquiry from the Prosecutor's Office.
The presented statistics do not include deaths recorded during the military operations in 2020.
In 2018, there were 38 recorded deaths of servicemen related to service, of which 7 were murders committed by the adversary, 1 was a homicide, 11 were suicides or cases of inciting suicide, 6 were service-related traffic accidents, 2 resulted from violations of weapon usage rules, 3 were due to illnesses, 2 were from violations of combat service rules, 1 was from a mine explosion, 3 were accidents, and 2 were due to violations of flight rules or preparation.
In 2019, there were 20 recorded deaths of servicemen related to service, including 4 murders by the adversary, 4 homicides, 7 suicides or cases of inciting suicide, 1 service-related traffic accident, 1 due to violations of weapon usage rules, 1 due to illness, and 2 accidents.
In 2020, there were 60 recorded deaths of servicemen related to service, of which 22 were murders by the adversary (including 5 who were injured during the 44-day war), 4 were homicides, 13 were suicides or cases of inciting suicide, 7 were service-related traffic accidents, 3 were due to violations of weapon usage rules, 5 were due to illness, 1 was from a violation of combat service rules, 1 was from a mine explosion, and 4 were accidents.
From January 1 to August 31, 2021, there were 26 recorded deaths of servicemen related to service, including 9 murders by the adversary (including 2 who were injured during the 44-day war), 3 homicides, 4 suicides or cases of inciting suicide, 4 were service-related traffic accidents, 1 was due to violations of weapon usage rules, 2 were due to illness, 1 was from a violation of combat service rules, and 2 were accidents.
It should be noted that in the last three and a half years, the number of service-related deaths in the army decreased in 2019, but sharply increased in 2020. Moreover, in 2020, there was an increase not only in murders committed by the adversary but also in suicides and cases of inciting suicide, traffic accidents, deaths due to illness, and deaths from accidents.
Regarding the data on soldiers killed between September 27 and November 9, 2020, the Prosecutor's Office has stated that it is currently not possible to provide final information on this matter, as the data on killed servicemen are continually being updated.
