Only Two Lawsuits Filed by Armenia Against Azerbaijan

The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports that a year after the 44-day war, the Republic of Armenia has filed only two interstate lawsuits against Azerbaijan in international courts.

According to the newspaper, the first lawsuit was submitted to the European Court of Human Rights on February 1, 2021, regarding violations of the "European Convention on Human Rights" due to the war. The mentioned convention guarantees the rights to respect for life, personal and family life, freedom of expression, thought, conscience, and religion, and protection of property. It prohibits torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, forced labor, arbitrary and unlawful detention, and more.

The second lawsuit was recently submitted on September 9 to the International Court of Justice (the UN International Court). It pertains to racial discrimination and the sufferings inflicted on people as a result of the war,” said Armenia’s representative at the ECHR, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, in an interview with "Zhoghovurd".

He noted that both lawsuits are currently pending. In contrast to the applications submitted by the state to the ECHR, there is a significantly larger number of letters directed to the European Court by various civil society organizations.

For instance, regarding the incident where journalists were injured from Azerbaijani fire in Martuni, Artsakh, on October 1, the British human rights organization “Media Defense” submitted an application in collaboration with the "Freedom of Information Center." In other words, wartime crimes will be examined in international venues.
