Erdogan's Statements on Crimea Leave a Displeasing Mark: Peskov

Just before a visit to Russia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's statements regarding Crimea leave a displeasing mark, but this does not hinder the prospects for a successful and constructive visit, said Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of Russia.

“In this situation, it probably left a bit of a, so to speak, displeasing mark that such statements began to be made during the days when the preparatory work for the upcoming visit has concluded. But nevertheless, this in no way impedes President Erdogan's prospects for a successful, meaningful, and constructive working visit to Russia,” Peskov stated.

As noted by militarynews.ru, he simultaneously pointed out that, in accordance with the traditions of international politics, sensitive topics should not be commented on prior to each other’s visits. “We know that we categorically disagree on this issue, and we know that there is no option to reach an agreement at this moment,” Peskov added.

When asked about the reason for the difficult period in Russian-Turkish relations, Peskov said, “I would not exaggerate the situation; after all, Turkey is our partner with whom we have highly developed relations. Against this backdrop, disagreements still persist over certain issues.”

Peskov noted that Erdogan's position on Crimea is well known in Russia, and the Turkish side has not concealed it. “Erdogan considers Crimea to be occupied,” he mentioned.

Peskov also pointed out that he recognizes many Turks, who, being ardent nationalists, consider Crimea to be Turkish. “But, thank God, these nationalists are not in power. And, thank God, the President of Turkey does not share their views,” he added.
