A Year Ago Today, a Senior Official Claimed There Would Be No War... Turkish Studies Expert

Turkish studies expert Varujan Geghamyan wrote on his Facebook page, "A year ago today, a senior official insisted during a closed meeting that there would be no war. In contrast, my warning and rationale that Azerbaijan, together with Turkey, would inevitably launch an attack on Armenia within days or weeks, received the response, 'Mr. Geghamyan, you are exaggerating.' That ended any substantive discussion.

I left that agency and headed to a small family gathering, deep in thought. I had two unsettling possibilities in my mind: either I was incompetent in my field (Turkology) and did not understand reality, or we were going to face a disastrous defeat in the impending war.

Ten hours after that meeting, the war began, during which the officials responsible for the governance system led us to defeat, primarily due to their boundless ignorance and superhuman arrogance. None of them have been punished to this day; moreover, they are still responsible for governing our country, smiling at us while announcing new losses.

When we restore our statehood, good governance will depend on involving only the best personnel in the management system, and accountability will be a core principle of conduct, as this is the path to preventing the demise of anti-Armenia and the salvation of eternal Armenia."
