Iranian Foreign Ministers Discuss Detention of Iranian Drivers
The meeting of the ministers took place in New York during the framework of the UN General Assembly, according to Iran's foreign ministry. It was noted that during the meeting, Abdollahian raised issues regarding the facilitation of transit and the movement of Iranian trucks (via the Kapan-Goris road), as well as several consular matters, including the detention of drivers by the Azerbaijani police.
It was emphasized that the issue should be resolved through bilateral communications. The Iranian Foreign Minister stated that third countries should not be allowed to affect the "friendly relations between the two countries." Abdollahian referred to the capture of the regions of Artsakh by Baku as "liberation of Azerbaijani territories" and added that restoring these areas could serve as a good basis for bilateral cooperation.
It should be recalled that the Goris-Kapan highway, which runs through southern Armenia, is partially controlled by Azerbaijani police. Since September 12, the authorities have begun stopping Iranian drivers and demanding payment for passage. In addition, two drivers have been arrested, accused of transporting cargo to Artsakh.
