Green Corridor for Cargo from Armenia to Russia May Launch in 2022, Says Deputy Minister of Economy

The green corridor for cargo from Armenia to Russia could be launched in 2022. This information was shared by the Deputy Minister of Economy of Armenia, Varos Simonian, in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.

The free movement of cargo without additional inspections is planned under the agreement on the implementation of electronic navigation seals in the Eurasian Economic Union.

The agreement is expected to be signed at the end of 2021, and subsequently ratified by the member countries in the following year. "Initially, we want to test the unrestricted transportation of cargo between Armenia and Russia, after which it will operate for all five countries of the union," Simonian added.

The electronic navigation seal with location tracking will be installed on freight containers. With its help, the inspection authorities of the sending and receiving countries will be able to see where the vehicle is located, and whether the container has been opened on the way. Consequently, the need for double-checking the cargo will be eliminated. This is particularly important for Armenia, as cargo going to Russia and other EAEU countries passes through third countries (mainly through Georgian territory).

If the agreement comes into force in the manner currently under discussion, freight vehicles will enter Russia from Armenia via Upper Lars without delays and inspections.

Currently, technical issues of the agreement are being discussed in the Eurasian Economic Commission, specifically regarding the use of seals for excise goods (alcohol and tobacco).

It should be noted that in mid-2022, Russia is set to complete the renovation of the Upper Lars checkpoint. As a result, its capacity will increase six and a half times, allowing for approximately up to 2,650 vehicles daily, with a prospective increase to three thousand.
