Wizz Air to Replace Ryanair, Offering Flights from Yerevan to London and Paris
The newspaper "Iravunk" reports: "We all remember the preferential conditions under which the famous Irish low-cost airline Ryanair entered the Armenian market, promising exceptionally affordable ticket prices for European destinations. However, after a short period of operating flights (which were not at the promised affordable prices), it ceased its activities in Armenia citing the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, it turns out that replacing Ryanair with the same preferential conditions (exempt from air taxes, service fees, etc.) is none other than the Hungarian airline Wizz Air, which, according to circulating rumors, will operate flights from Yerevan to London and Paris.
It is a fact that after Ryanair entered the market, local carriers "Taron Avia" and "Taron" have already shut down. Should a new low-cost carrier emerge, other local companies, which are barely competing today, could also be at risk of closure.
In this context, it is at least surprising why aviation authorities grant preferential conditions to foreign airlines, creating unequal conditions for local companies that face increasing risks day by day. This raises a logical question—under what circumstances does the aviation authority act in this manner? According to us, either when serving the interests of a foreign state with the intent to completely destroy local aviation or when there are corruption risks and personal gains involved.
We will attempt to obtain answers to this question soon from the State Committee of Civil Aviation, particularly about where the much-advertised Ryanair went, which the committee considered a brilliant project. And whether they consider the entry of the Hungarian airline to be another "brilliant project." In any case, we remind you that all these actions are recorded, and the day will come for accountability."
