Under What Conditions Will Russia Recognize Taliban Rule? Lavrov Elaborates
The question of officially recognizing the Taliban regime will be considered depending on its actions, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as reported by RIA Novosti.
“Depending on how the Taliban fulfills its declared objectives and principles of governance, this recognition will be evaluated in a specific context,” Lavrov said.
“Everyone is now talking about the need to establish relations with the Taliban. Including those who hastily withdrew their embassies from the country, which we have not done... We will inevitably have to talk with the Taliban. Almost everyone is compelled to do so,” the minister added.
“The Russian embassy is operational. We have optimized its staff; nearly all family members—women and children—have left. However, a combat-ready team remains, providing us with quite useful information that we use in communications with foreign partners,” Lavrov noted.
According to him, the Taliban has declared that it does not intend to seize power. “We are aware of and encourage the statements made by the Taliban movement regarding their intention not to seize power and that they wish to make the government, as they say, inclusive,” Lavrov emphasized.
