Charchyan Hospitalized Under Near Fainting Conditions: Vardevanyan
"There is no evidentiary threshold overcome to issue a guilty verdict in the case of Armen Charchyan. It simply does not exist," stated Aram Vardevanyan, a member of the National Assembly from the ‘Armenia’ faction and a lawyer, during a conversation with reporters near the ‘Kanaker-Zeytun’ Medical Center on September 9.
“In such circumstances, detaining a person in custody in this fetishized manner has nothing to do with the rule of law. Law is not about this. Law is about the fact that detention is an extreme measure when no other means are available to ensure an individual's proper behavior. I often ask myself this question: What interest is at stake that is more important than a person's life, livelihood, health? This could be revenge or one of the most classic manifestations of an authoritarian regime. This is a frightening atmosphere. I am saddened that we have such a totally inactive legal system,” he said.
Vardevanyan noted that Armen Charchyan was transferred to the hospital yesterday under near fainting conditions. “This is torture. It is astonishing what we are discussing regarding the Supreme Judicial Council, what level of prosecution we are referring to in such circumstances.”
When asked about their forthcoming actions, the parliamentarian replied, “There are actions we are taking that we have not yet made public. We will try to present these circumstances to the international community as well. I am aware that actions are being taken regarding the formation of a medical commission and carrying out an examination.”
