People Will Leave Border Villages: Geghamasar Leader on Community Consolidation

The government intends to merge the Geghamasar community in the Gegharkunik region with the Vardenis community, a move that carries numerous risks. This was stated by Geghamasar leader Hakob Avetyan in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.

"The community consists of 18 villages. There was a time when they said the community was very large, but now it is already small and is being further consolidated," he said.

According to Avetyan, the decision has a political context. Everything began during the snap parliamentary elections when he decided to join the opposition camp. The decision of the community leader has not been forgiven by the authorities. Furthermore, the former regional governor demanded that Avetyan resign.

"Gnel Sanosyan demanded that I resign, but I firmly and concisely rejected this proposal, I did not accept it. Now they are considering another option to get rid of me, which could have much worse consequences," Avetyan noted.

The community leader stated that during his tenure, several issues have been resolved. All settlements have been provided with drinking water, and other communication issues have also been addressed. However, there are still many unresolved problems in Geghamasar, with security issues now added to the list.

"After the new consolidation, these communities and villages will be neglected. If this already affected populace feels that they are being overlooked, they will leave their homes. And what will happen if the residents of border villages leave the area...?" Avetyan emphasized.
