Moscow's 874th Birthday Celebrated in Yerevan

Moscow is celebrating its 874th birthday. The capital of Russia's holiday is being commemorated in Yerevan for the third consecutive year, organized by the Moscow Cultural and Creative Center ‘Dom Moskvy’. The schedule of events is packed and diverse, encompassing educational, cultural, social, and sporting activities.

This year, for the first time, the ‘Dom Moskvy’ center awarded a scholarship to a student from the Faculty of Philology (specializing in Russian language and literature) in honor of Moscow's 874th anniversary. The scholarship will be awarded annually on Moscow Day to a best-performing student for the popularization of the Russian language.

“Moscow and Yerevan are united by centuries-long fraternal and partner relations, spiritual closeness, and mutual interest in each other’s traditions and customs. Within the framework of this cooperation, our center promotes the development of cultural, educational, business, and humanitarian ties between the capitals of our two countries, supports the popularization of the Russian language, and fosters tourism between the two cities and nations. I am confident that such events will facilitate the development of cultural dialogue,” said Vahram Karapetyan, the director of the 'Dom Moskvy' center in Yerevan.

The opening of Moscow Days was marked by the presentation of Mikhail Amirkhanyan’s book 'Armenia in the Mirror of Russian Poetry'. The book showcases poems and works by Russian writers that mention Armenia and Armenians. Actors from the Armenian theater in Moscow joined the presentation online and read the poems included in the book.

Younger talents also featured at the event, including Julia Malinova, a winner of the all-Russian competition ‘Blue Bird’.

As part of the events, a grand concert dedicated to Moscow's 874th anniversary will take place on September 4, featuring beloved Armenian and Russian singers performing renowned compositions by composer Arno Babajanyan. The '7 Songs of Moscow' concert will be accompanied by the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of artistic director and chief conductor Eduard Topchyan.

“Babajanyan's character and legacy are symbols of the strong cultural ties between Armenia and Russia. Of course, the priority of the National Philharmonic Orchestra is to present a classical academic repertoire, but we always love to highlight Babajanyan's popular compositions, which are very much loved by the public. I am pleased to note that the concert will feature brilliant, talented young Armenian singers, and it is a great pleasure to work with them,” said Eduard Topchyan.

Within the framework of Moscow Day, chess tournaments are being organized in cooperation with the Armenian Chess Academy and the Moscow Chess Federation. Also, checkers tournaments in collaboration with the Armenian Checkers Federation have become an annual tradition.

As part of the events, a large number of textbooks and fiction literature have been provided to various educational institutions in the regions. The events for Moscow Day will conclude with the opening of the program 'North Star - Russian Film Days in Armenia' and the screening of the first film. The film days are planned to become monthly events. Renowned Russian filmmakers will arrive in Armenia for each film screening. The purpose of the program is to strengthen ties between the two countries in the film industry and create a collaborative working platform. The first film to be screened will be director Andrey Bogatyryov's film 'Red Phantom' (2020 thriller). Co-writers of the screenplay include Vyacheslav Shikhaleev, Pavel Abramenkov, Armen Vatyan, and Andrey Bogatyryov. The main producer of the film, Tatiana Voronetskaya, founder and general director of 'Rosfilm', will also arrive in Armenia.

All events are held at the initiative of the Department of External Economic and International Relations of the Moscow City Government and the state unitary enterprise 'Moscow Center for International Cooperation', with the support of the Russian Embassy in Armenia and the Yerevan City Hall.
