“It Seems There Is an Intent to Endanger His Life”: Charchyan Transferred from Hospital to Prison

Recently, Armen Charchyan, a member of the 'Armenia' alliance and former director of the Izmirlian Medical Center, was transferred from the hospital to the 'Vardashen' penitentiary institution. We had previously reported that on August 24, Charchyan suffered a heart attack and was moved from the penitentiary to the 'Nork-Marash' Medical Center on the same day.

Charchyan's lawyer, Aram Vardevanyan, noted that it appears there is an intent to put Charchyan's health and life in jeopardy. “In such situations, humanity should prevail. What is the goal? To deteriorate a person’s health? As far as I know, the doctors did not find Charchyan's health condition sufficient to transfer him to prison,” said Vardevanyan.

He also highlighted that the embassies operating in Armenia have been strangely silent, ignoring the violation of human rights.

Charchyan’s other lawyer, Erik Aleksanyan, indicated that they have already approached the prison administration and requested that they also contact a medical commission to obtain a conclusion regarding Charchyan’s health condition. “After receiving that information, the prison should appeal to the court to indicate that detention is incompatible with the illness, and the court should hold a session and make a decision,” said Aleksanyan.

Charchyan's legal team is expected to enter the penitentiary shortly to visit the professor and promise to share more details afterward.

He reminded that they have already submitted a request for an urgent session to address the change of Charchyan's detention measure. However, as of now, they have not received news from the court.

It is noteworthy that the next court session in Charchyan’s case is scheduled for October 1. Additionally, Charchyan has been diagnosed with stage III arterial hypertension (crisis stage), heart failure, severe insulin-dependent diabetes, and chronic kidney failure. Moreover, he suffered an acute myocardial infarction on August 24.
