The detention period of the head of the Kajaran community has been extended by two months, lawyer

Lawyer Lusine Sahakyan has announced on her Facebook page that the detention period of Manvel Paramazyan, the head of the Kajaran community, has been extended by two months.

The post reads as follows: "The Yerevan city court has decided to extend by two months the period of detention for Manvel Paramazyan, the head of the Kajaran community in Syunik province. This time, the 'honor' of signing the previously made political decision was granted to Mnatsakan Martirosyan (naturally, once again through paper marking methods).

I believe there is no need to further address the essence of the case. The public is already sufficiently aware of the fact that Manvel Paramazyan is accused of acts that are not only unlawful, but he is also not connected to them at all. Moreover, as a lawyer, I generally find it impossible to analyze recent politically motivated prosecution cases from a legal standpoint.

However, there is a very interesting aspect present in the materials submitted to the court. It turns out that the person who filed the report in this case is directly in contact with Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan and the CP representative in the National Assembly, Armen Khachatryan. According to the informant, these officials provided him with special phone numbers for rapid and unobstructed communication.

Furthermore, from the informant’s words, it is known that even 'Pasha' is personally aware of the case (essentially, Nikol Pashinyan is referred to as 'Pasha' by his supporters in Syunik province).

At this stage, however, the more important aspect for us is that neither the one giving the political directive nor those blindly executing it are deterred by the threats to Manvel Paramazyan's health and life, even while in detention.

Prior to these processes, Manvel Paramazyan underwent medical examinations related to health issues, including abroad. He was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea. Individuals suffering from this condition, among other problems, are constantly at risk of breathing cessation during sleep. Such individuals must use special devices while sleeping and require assistance from caregivers.

Even during his time in detention, Manvel Paramazyan’s diagnosis has also been confirmed by local doctors, while measures to prevent threats to his life cannot be undertaken in the conditions of a penal institution.

This means we are dealing not only with a violation of an individual’s right to freedom but also with attacks on the right to life and displays of inhumane treatment. We have long known that the decision-makers regarding detentions have never cared about such issues, but the responsibility that the Republic of Armenia will bear as a state that allows such violations will be significant and unavoidable."
