Identity of Individual Who Burned Mahatma Gandhi's Statue in Yerevan Revealed
The investigation into the case of damaging the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Yerevan has concluded in the investigative department of the Ajapnyak and Davtashen administrative districts of the Yerevan Investigative Committee.
As a result of pre-trial investigative actions and other procedural measures undertaken in conjunction with the staff of the Armenian police, significant circumstances of the case have been determined, including the identity of the individual who committed the crime. The suspect is a 61-year-old resident of Yerevan.
The investigation revealed that the man, who had been conducting painting work in the playgrounds adjacent to the Armenia Medical Center, poured gasoline into the foundation pit of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at around 01:30 on April 24, 2021, while under the influence of alcohol, set it on fire, and fled the scene.
During the investigation, the man was interrogated regarding the circumstances of the incident and provided a self-incriminating testimony. Based on sufficient evidence obtained, the 61-year-old man has been charged under Article 185, Part 2, Clause 1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia, and a restrictive measure of a signature not to leave has been selected.
The investigation has been completed, and the criminal case has been sent to court with an accusatory conclusion.
