Are Negotiations with Turkey Ongoing on Opening Borders? Arman Abovyan
My last inquiry as a member of parliament is related to a very important but little-discussed process that seemingly is not being talked about, yet it appears to be within the logic of the current government's actions and objectives. This is what former MP Arman Abovyan wrote on his Facebook page.
"Turkey... The ruling authorities often mention the so-called 'opening of communications,' primarily referring to the opening of logistical routes with Azerbaijan (which, in my view, will actually have devastating consequences for the country's territorial integrity and socio-economic security). However, I am convinced that the government is also actively working on issues regarding the opening of the border with Turkey and establishing diplomatic relations.
In this context, I find it necessary to remind about one of the preconditions that the Turks consistently raised when negotiating with the Armenian side. This concerns the negotiations regarding the undeniable fact of the Armenian Genocide. I would also like to remind that the Turks' main goal is to dilute the impact of the fact of the Armenian Genocide in terms of international pressure, which is possible if Armenia suddenly agrees to the Turks' idea of creating joint commissions under the pretext of 'historical studies.' This would be an unacceptable and anti-Armenian process, whose main aim would be to push a crucial political issue for us out of the international agenda.
Therefore, a few days ago, I officially approached the government to understand what processes are currently taking place regarding the aforementioned issues. I can assure you that despite my powers as an MP having already ceased, I will remain very attentive and vigilant regarding the ongoing processes around this and other crucial matters. Let's see what answer we will receive," Abovyan wrote.
