Ancient Roman Ship Full of Wine Jars Discovered Near Sicily's Shores
Italian scientists have discovered a second-century BC ship believed to have been transporting jars of wine near the northern shores of Sicily. The vessel was found at a depth of 92 meters in the waters off the Isola delle Femmine island, in the province of Palermo.
Thanks to an underwater robot, researchers have managed to obtain the first images of the jars, which are thought to have been used for transporting wine. The discovery has been hailed by Sicilian authorities as one of the most significant archaeological finds in recent years.
Sicily's maritime governance head has stated that the find confirms the presence of numerous archaeological treasures at depths of over 50-80 meters off the shores of the Italian island.
