On July 28, 2021, between 03:30 and 03:50, a group of armed servicemen from the Republic of Azerbaijan committed acts of violence against Armenian Armed Forces personnel in the administrative areas of Vardenis and Geghamasar in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia. This was done with the intent to violate the territorial integrity of Armenia, separate a part of its territory, and seize it.
During the incident, they fired artillery and small arms at Armenian servicemen with the intention of killing two or more individuals, motivated by national, racial, or religious hatred or fanaticism. They managed to capture one of the protected positions. As a result, Senior Lieutenant Hayk Gevorgyan of the N military unit of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, along with compulsory conscripts Private Davit Kocharyan and Private Koryun Harutyunyan, died from gunshot and shrapnel injuries. Additionally, five other compulsory conscript soldiers sustained varied degrees of gunshot and shrapnel wounds.
