Parliament to Restrict Movement of Journalists, MP Sounds Alarm
MP and candidate from the "Honorary Title" alliance, Taguhi Tovmasyan, has issued a statement regarding the freedom of journalists. In the statement, she said:
“The freedom of journalists is a necessity, and never a headache! Dear compatriots and respected representatives of the media, I have been informed that a decision has been made to limit the movement of journalists in the parliament. I find such an approach towards journalists strictly unacceptable. Especially in the country’s legislative body, working with public figures plays a significant role in ensuring the accountability of elected officials and the transparency of parliamentary activities.
We must note that the disruption of such an important free and unrestricted connection between journalists and MPs will have very negative consequences for a parliamentary country, where journalists have traditionally had the right to move freely and have been able to utilize this opportunity in the important task of protecting public interests.
I would like to inform you that I have already addressed the head of the Parliament’s administration, requesting information on the following questions:
- Has a decision been made to restrict the movement of journalists in parliament, and on what grounds?
- Why are journalists located in a special room, and why is their movement being restricted in the National Assembly?
- Why is the connection between journalists and MPs being limited? This connection has traditionally been free, and journalists have had the right to move freely in parliament, but now this crucial connection is being disrupted and their movement is being restricted.
- What political purpose does this differentiated approach towards journalists serve?
I hope to receive a response soon, and we will clarify why restrictions are being applied to journalists, violating the traditions established since the formation of the parliament.
