Armenia Negotiating with the US for Moderna Vaccine Acquisition
Armenia is experiencing a gradual increase in COVID-19 infection rates, with the Health Minister warning of the potential danger of a new wave this autumn. He has not ruled out the presence of the Delta variant in the country, though no confirmed cases have been reported at this time.
"Of course, the variant is circulating in Armenia because we have open borders with both Russia and Georgia, where cases have been detected," the minister stated, adding that the healthcare system continues to operate under stress.
In the past three weeks, there has been a significant increase in the number of vaccinated individuals in Armenia. Currently, statistics show that over 150,000 citizens have been vaccinated. "We have devised an interesting toolkit to promote vaccination. We are focusing our attention more on the cultural sector. Soon, those getting vaccinated will have the chance to win tickets for performances, opera, and cultural events in a lottery," Avanesyan emphasized. "Encouraging measures like these need to be part of our public information campaign."
More than 152,000 COVID-19 vaccinations have been administered in Armenia. There are three types of vaccines available: AstraZeneca, Sputnik-V, and Coronovac. Individuals aged 18 and above can choose which vaccine they wish to receive. Negotiations are ongoing with the United States regarding the acquisition of American vaccines, including the Moderna vaccine produced by the company led by Nubar Afeyan.
