New Revelation: Money Requested from the Friend of a Deceased in Canada for Cemetery Expenses

The Investigative Committee of Armenia has reported the details of a significant fraud case regarding the large-scale theft committed by a 23-year-old individual.

According to the information provided by the committee's Information and Public Relations Department, the young man, aware that a resident of the Ararat region had lost a grandson on September 27, 2020, during the war unleashed by Azerbaijan against the Republic of Artsakh, carried out a plan to defraud the said resident.

Utilizing a Facebook page registered under the name of the resident, he managed to establish contact via the Messenger application with an acquaintance living in Canada, claiming that the funds were needed to cover the costs associated with the deceased grandson's burial. Under this pretext, he requested money as assistance.

The woman ended up transferring a large sum of 1,606,637 AMD through a money transfer system to the accounts specified by the young man, who then fraudulently misappropriated the amount.

Based on the sufficient evidence gathered, the young man has been charged under Article 178, Part 2, Point 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. He has been placed under arrest as a measure of restraint. The preliminary investigation has been completed, and the criminal case has been sent to court with an accusatory conclusion.

Note: A suspect or accused in an alleged crime is considered innocent until proven guilty by a legally binding court decision according to the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Republic of Armenia.
