Electric Cars Will Become More Expensive Starting January: 'Past'
The newspaper 'Past' reports: In March 2020, the Council of the EAEU made a decision to zero out the import customs duty rate of the unified customs tariff of the Eurasian Economic Union for vehicles with electric motors. One of the reasons for this was the 'absence of domestic production.'
However, this decision is not permanent. According to available information, Russia and Kazakhstan intend to start producing electric cars. Accordingly, the zero duty rate for electric cars imported into EAEU countries, including Armenia, will be effective until December 31, 2021. This means that starting January 1, 2022, a significant customs duty will come into effect, which will greatly increase the price of imported electric vehicles.
According to 'Past,' taking this into account, as well as the fact that the VAT does not apply to electric cars sold in Armenia, interest in these vehicles is growing, and people are working to acquire them before December 31, 2021. By the way, experts in the field mentioned in a conversation with us that the government also has a serious role to play in supporting this process, as on one hand, our country is becoming a 'graveyard of cars,' while on the other hand, there is a serious air pollution problem.
